Nattokinase is a serine proteinase produced during the fermentation of the traditional Japanese condiment natto by the probiotic Bacillus subtilis (natto). Nattokinase supports fibrinolysis, the breaking up of thrombi (abnormal blood clots within blood vessels), by reducing excessive levels of plasminogen activator inhibitor type I (PAI-1), an enzyme, which suppresses the body’s fibrinolytic activity.
